Monktec is a veteran Boston producer with the knack for making music that sounds like what you might hear inside an abandoned tunnel underneath a prison complex on some remote island off the coast of northern Siberia. So basically in other words he knows how to use a synthesizer to make the coldest, brashest sounds possible. His latest effort, “Mixed Messages”, marries a straight, sparse TR-909 drumkit with roaring sub bass and an icy, abrasive lead. Despite the darkness it’s quite DJ friendly and is centered upon a palatable broken beat.
